Theorising from the South: Art as decolonising practice in Latin America

Date: Mon Oct 19 2026 00:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time) at 14:00 - 18:00

Location: CRASSH Meeting Room

About this event To speak of theorizing from the South is to begin with a different sense of what art can do. Latin American artistic practice, characterised by its profound imbrication with sociality and its refusal to compartmentalise aesthetics and politics, does not merely illustrate decolonial theory produced elsewhere — it generates its own. Bringing together artists, curators, scholars and activists across the region, this symposium asks what kinds of knowledge such practice enables, what kinds of institutions it makes possible, and what languages and futures it gestures toward. These questions are also at the heart of Unmaking to Make: Art as Decolonising Practice in Latin America’s Future, Past and Present, the recently published volume around which the symposium is convened.
